The Dumb Friends League is committed to the welfare of animals.

Founded in 1910, the Dumb Friends League is the largest private, nonprofit animal welfare organization in the Rocky Mountain region. The League is an open admission shelter and takes in any animal in need. Last year alone, the League took in nearly 26,000 animals and of those placed 90 percent of “adoptable” pets – those with good health and temperament – in new, loving homes. The League also reunited nearly 2,300 lost dogs, cats and other small pets with their owners.

Our Commitment to the welfare of animals:
  • We shall provide shelter and care for the animals.
  • We shall provide programs and services that enhance the bond between animals and people.
  • We shall be advocates for animals… speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.
  • The League has many programs to help pets & people:
  • Behavior assistance through a free 24-hour Behavior Helpline
  • Dog obedience classes and Puppy Club offered to the public
  • Head Start obedience classes for resident League dogs
  • Free humane education classes for children and adults
  • Foster care for animals that need extra time and TLC before going up for adoption
  • PAW (Pets Are Welcome) program – free referral service to help people find pet-friendly rental housing
  • The League has two shelter locations:
  • its main shelter at 2080 S. Quebec St. in Denver and the Buddy Center at 4556 Castleton Court in Castle Rock.
